Looking Back... Planning Forward!

A year-end exercise. Bryan suggests gratitude journaling as the antidote to a mind that catalogues what is missing, then uses the reflection as the raw material for planning a more deliberate year.

Looking Back... Planning Forward!

First a quote: With the ending of a year, it’s time to think of the new possibilities in the future.” – Unknown

Hello and happy Monday.

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the journey we’ve taken over the past twelve months. Taking stock of our experiences, accomplishments, and lessons learned is a valuable exercise that can provide insights for a more purposeful and fulfilling future. The following are a few thoughts to ponder as we all prepare to begin a new year.

Gratitude Journaling – It seems so easy for us, as humans, to focus on all those things that seem to be missing from our lives, from love & relationships to material possessions and things. We can easily become consumed by all the problems and challenges we face in life.

I propose this is a good time to focus on all the things and people we take for granted. Consider creating a gratitude journal where you jot down moments, achievements, and the people you’re thankful for. Focusing on the positive aspects can set a constructive tone for your future endeavors.

Evaluate Achievements and Setbacks – Assess your achievements and setbacks throughout the year. Identify the goals you accomplished and acknowledge the challenges you faced. Understanding what worked well and what didn’t can guide you in setting realistic and achievable goals for the year ahead.

Learn from Challenges – Life is filled with challenges, and each obstacle presents an opportunity to learn and grow. Reflect on the difficulties you encountered, how you worked through them, and the lessons gained. Use these experiences to build resilience and develop strategies for overcoming future challenges.

Personal Growth and Development – Consider how you’ve grown over the past year, both personally and professionally. Reflect on the skills you’ve acquired, the knowledge you’ve gained, and the personal development milestones you’ve reached. This self-awareness can help you set meaningful and intentional goals for your personal growth in the new year.

Relationships and Connections – Review the important relationships in all aspects of your life. Assess the quality of your connections and consider whether any adjustments are needed. Strengthening positive relationships and letting go of toxic ones can contribute significantly to your overall well-being.

Health and Well-being – Evaluate your physical and mental well-being. Reflect on your health habits, stress management strategies, and self-care routines. Identifying areas for improvement can guide you in creating a wellness plan for the upcoming year.

Financial Review – Take a close look at your financial situation. Review your spending habits, savings, and investments. Assess whether your financial goals align with your current priorities and adjust as needed to ensure a secure and stable future.

Set Intentions for the New Year – Armed with insights from your reflection, set clear intentions for the new year. Define your goals, both short-term and long-term, and outline the steps you’ll take to achieve them. Having a roadmap for the future will provide direction and motivation for the upcoming year.

Reflecting on the past year is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. It allows you to celebrate your successes, learn from challenges, and pave the way for a more purposeful and fulfilling future. It also allows you to embrace the wisdom gained from the past and step confidently into the opportunities that lie ahead.

May you take time during the hectic holiday season ahead, to reflect on the most important people in your life. Please remember, the most important things in life… are not things.

Sincerely,

Bryan Yager
