Meet Bryan Yager

Bryan Yager, leadership development consultant

Leadership has never been a destination for me. It's been a lifelong journey. For more than 45 years, I've been learning what it means to lead well, and I'm still learning.

My journey didn't begin with a consulting practice or a corner office. It began on a painting crew in Colorado and eventually led me to serve as Vice President of Management and Organizational Development for one of the nation's largest retailers.

Along the way, I learned an important lesson:

Leadership theories are interesting. Results matter.

When you're helping develop leaders across hundreds of locations and supporting tens of thousands of employees, there's little room for ideas that sound good but don't work. Those experiences taught me that culture matters, trust matters, and leadership often reveals itself in the smallest moments... in a conversation, a decision, or a simple act of respect.

One of my mentors shared a lesson I've never forgotten:

"Leaders must never be afraid to use their authority, yet the greatest leaders rarely do."

I've found that's true. Influence, not positions or titles, is what earns commitment.

Over the years, I've been privileged to serve as an executive, consultant, coach, adjunct professor, author, and speaker. Along the way, I earned certifications in Everything DiSC®, Five Behaviors®, and the Denison Organizational Culture Survey, and twice received Teaching Excellence awards selected by graduating students.

Yet if there is one belief that has remained constant throughout my career, it's this:

Leadership is first a way of thinking before it is a set of skills.

That belief continues to shape my work with organizations across manufacturing, healthcare, technology, retail, government, finance, and nonprofit organizations.

Somewhere along the way, I also started writing. What began as a simple leadership reflection has grown into more than 300 Monday Morning Minute articles, each ending with the same question I continue to ask myself: how will you live, love, or lead differently, or better, this week?

Philosophy

What I've Come to Believe

Over more than 45 years of leading, coaching, and developing others, I've worked with thousands of leaders across organizations of every size and industry. While leadership styles vary, I've found that the most effective leaders share a few timeless qualities.

Leadership Starts on the Inside

The best leaders I've known were rarely the ones with the most authority. They were the ones with the greatest self-awareness. Leadership begins with who you are, how you show up, and the example you set for others.

Leadership Begins in the Mirror

Before we can effectively develop others, we must be willing to develop ourselves. One of the first questions I ask leaders is: "What do you need to change about yourself to become the leader your team deserves?" Leadership always starts with the person in the mirror.

Be Intentional

Great leadership rarely happens by accident. We can't control the wind, but we can adjust our sails. Every day gives us another opportunity to choose how we communicate, encourage, coach, delegate, and lead.

Choose Authenticity

People don't follow perfection. They follow people they trust. The strongest leaders lead with humility, honesty, and consistency rather than relying on position or title. One lesson I've learned is this: teams tend to reflect the light, or the shadow, of their leaders.

Keep It Practical

Every idea I teach has been tested in real organizations facing real challenges. If it doesn't work in your workplace on Monday morning... I don't teach it.

"How will you live, love, or lead differently, or better, this week?"
