Can't Light the Way with an Empty Lamp!

Fit your own oxygen mask first. Bryan works the airline instruction outward into parenting and leadership, and names the paradox: the moments that most demand your best self are usually the moments you are most depleted.

Can't Light the Way with an Empty Lamp!

Hello, and happy Monday.

First a quote: “Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.” – Katie Reed

Frequent travelers know the airline instruction well: in the event of cabin pressure changes, place your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. At first, it may sound selfish; but, in reality, it is one of the most selfless acts you can take. If you’re unable to breathe, you can’t help anyone else.

The same principle applies in life and leadership.

  • Parents running on empty aren’t fully present for their children.

  • Drowsy drivers pose a threat to themselves and others.

  • Professional drivers and airline crews are regulated, by law, to only work a limited number of hours because fatigue isn’t just unhealthy—it’s dangerous.

And yet, here’s the paradox: the very times we most need to be our “best selves”—as a spouse, parent, or leader—are often when exhaustion, stress, or distraction causes us to show up at our worst. I know I’ve seen it in my own marriage, parenting, and leadership. Perhaps you have too.

As leaders, it’s during conflict, pressure, and change that others need us to be our “best selves.” Ironically, those are also the times we’re most likely to be depleted. That’s when self-care matters most. Putting on your own oxygen mask is not indulgence—it’s preparation.

Since we’re all wired differently, self-care will look different for each of us. Here are some simple practices that have worked for me, and for many of my coaching clients:

  • Move your body. If the gym feels impossible, take a short walk.

  • Breathe and be present. Meditation, prayer, or mindfulness can reset your focus.

  • Channel your energy. Play a sport, work with your hands, or find a healthy outlet for stress.

  • Step away. A vacation is ideal, but even a half-day break can work wonders.

  • Feed your mind and spirit. Read, listen to music, or enjoy a sunrise on a regular basis.

  • Connect with nature. Sit by water, take in a sunset, or simply look up at the stars.

The bottom line: you can’t pour from an empty cup. Refueling isn’t a luxury—it’s a leadership responsibility.

So, let me ask: What do you do to recharge, refresh, and refocus so you can be your best when it matters most?

I’d love to hear your ideas and share them with others.

Bonus quotes below.

How will you live, love, or lead, differently or better, this week?

Sincerely,
